My profile of the Grand Teton is up on Adventure Journal today — if you’ve ever seen it, or seen great photos of it, you know what I mean when I say, “The Grand Teton was not the first mountain I ever saw, but it might as well have been.”

Brings back old memories! The Grand was my first proper rock climb, via the upper Exum route. It scared the crap out of me and I promised all the gods I would never, ever again put myself in such a tenuous position. However, the next day, sitting in a outdoor cafe in Jackson, looking back at the stunning mountain and still feeling the adrenaline rush, I sighed, knowing that I was hooked. I would have to climb again. The Grand does that to you.
My first real look at The Grand was atop Buck Mountain thanks to Big City Mountaineers. The whole area of Jackson Hole is truly amazing. I could only imagine coming up on The Tetons back in the 1800’s after miles and miles of travel through the prairie. Breathtaking I’m sure! Thanks for the history lesson.
