I was out for a trail run in the mountains one day last fall and got caught in some wind and rain, and I started thinking about “the elements,” as we usually refer to the different characteristics of weather. I thought about which one was my least favorite (probably wind), but also how there are far more “elements” to the things we do in the outdoors than just weather. So I started listing a few of them when I got home, and then I decided to make a periodic table of them—exactly like the real periodic table, but with my totally made-up “elements” subbed in. (Except for oxygen, which is on the real periodic table, and also useful in adventure.)
